TRAVEL HEALTHY TIPS

Who’s planning to travel this summer?? 🙋‍♀️

This little motley crew and I be on the go for an ENTIRE MONTH!! Visiting 3 states, hopping numerous LONG flights, & several LONG road trips.

Luckily this isn’t my first rodeo!! I wanted to equip you with some of my Travel Healthy Tips before our Summer Adventures begin.

WHY TRAVEL HEALTHY?

Ever come back from your vacation feeling like you need another vacation?? Yeah, me too!

We are blessed to travel quite a bit in this family, so after one too many trips where we all got sick; or, we came back feeling like we needed another week to recuperate from our “vacation”, I got smart and started doing some key things that REALLY HELP us stay healthy & come home feeling better than when we left!

IT’S NOT ALL OR NOTHING!

Worry not, I’m not going to say to avoid eating out or to go full throttle waking up at 6 a.m. to workout. I AM going to advocate trying some of the ideas below. See how they work for you family.

We travel fully intending to enjoy ourselves. Sleep in, eat out, have fun, but we just want to show up as the healthiest versions of our selves so we can enjoy things that much more!!

A FEW KEY AREAS TO FOCUS ON

IMMUNITY BOOSTING MUST HAVES

This is a topic I’m super passionate about because if you can lead with PREVENTION then you set yourself up for success from the get go.

I have devoted an ENTIRE Blog to this topic alone. To see my deep dive into Immunity Boosting Tips CLICK HERE

These are my standard go to’s before & during travel.

IMMUNE BOOSTING TIPS

By supplementing before and during, drinking our daily smoothies packed with vitamins to ensure they are getting a daily dose of dense nutrition, as well as HYDRATING, washing hands, using our Essential Oils & keeping the kiddos vaccinated, we have been much more successful at keeping the kids and ourselves healthy while traveling!

HEALTHY FOODS ON THE GO

HEALTHY TRAVEL SNACKS

We do our fare share of eating out when we travel. But packing healthy snacks for hotel room stays, & long plane & car rides sets us up to not grab Fast Food around every corner.

We ALWAYS bring a soft-sided travel cooler as a carry on or in the car and pack things like…

  • chopped fresh veggies & fruit (apples, mango, celery, jicama, sliced bell peppers, grapes, berries)
  • String Cheese (goat cheese sticks are the kids favorite)
  • cutie oranges
  • baby carrots
  • sliced cucumber & watermelon (high water content means hydration)
  • apple sauce pouches
  • Grass Fed Jerky or Salmon/ Tuna Jerky
  • Dried Fruit (apples, blueberries, mango are our faves)
  • Trail Mix (it’s fun to let kids go to Sprouts and make their own for trips)
  • Snack Bars (our go-tos are Beachbars. Chocolate Almond Cherry is our FAVE, but there is also Chocolate Peanut Butter. They are AMAZING!!)
  • That’s It Fruit Bars
  • Nut Butters (you can get individual packs from Justins Almond, Peanut , or Cashew Butter)
  • Humus & Chipolte “Bitchin” Spread (it’s a dip made from almonds and is amazing. We find it at Whole Foods)
  • No Bake Energy Bites
  • OUR FAVORITE TRUSTED TRAVEL BLENDER!!! Never leave home without our Oster!!!
HEALTHY TRAVEL SNACKS

We also bring some “better bads”

Snack food “munchies” with minimal ingredients that we can recognize and are minimally processed.

  • Annies Cheddar Bunnies (Target/ Whole Foods)
  • Terra Plantain Chips (Whole Foods)
  • Dang Rice Crackers (Whole Foods)
  • Grain Free Paleo Puffs or HIPPEAs
  • Off the Eaten Path Veggie Crisps (Costco)
  • Siete Cassava Flour Tortilla Chips
  • Pistachio Nuts
  • Trail Mix (everything in moderation)

PLAN AHEAD

When we take road trips, instead of being impulsive and stopping at Fast Food places, (Unless there is a Chick-Fil-A, if so WE ALWAYS STOP 😉 ) We look ahead and find grocery stores along our route that have a deli.

We pick up pre-made salads, or a rotisserie chicken, & restock our fresh fruit and veggie snacks. Most Grocers have a great deli section with plenty of options that are far better for you than fast food.

Another way we stay on track is hitting up a local farmers market or grocery once we check into our hotel or Air BNB.

Farmers markets are fun to check out anyway and you can usually find some really great treasures there.

Most hotels have a mini fridge in the room, so at the grocery we get Coconut or almond milk so we can make our smoothies in our room. We even do this when we take cruises!! Cause we never leave home without OUR FAVORITE TRAVEL BLENDER

This way when we do eat out we don’t feel “GUILTY” for enjoying great food and desserts, or the occasional cocktail, because the bulk of our food choices are smart & healthy.

Remember it’s what you do consistently that get’s you results not occasionally!! ENJOY!

Workouts that go where I do!

All the workouts I do are able to be brought me on the virtual platform. So I can stream my library of over 1000+ workouts of varying styles OR download up to 10 of them to take with me on my phone or tablet if I know I won’t have connectivity.

It takes all the guess workout out of “what to do” while I’m traveling.

You can do these ANYWHERE! (The beach, mountain camping, a hotel room, hotel gym.) Most are 15-30 mins, & require NO or little equipment, but I do bring my…

You can even access the SAME workouts I do + get my customized Travel Fit Calendar, along with all my other customized workout calendars, and get my customized meal plans & recipes as a part of my Virtual Wellness Studio. GET MOVING

Whether you’re doing an actual workout or just GETTING OUTSIDE daily to walk, hike, paddle board, or swim, moving and being outdoors is great for your overall health & wellness.

If you’re sightseeing consider walking or renting a Biki Bike (public bike rental racks) instead of Ubering. Look for opportunities to try something you don’t normally do.

Try out something you’ve never done before. Be adventurous, try a yoga class, spin class. Some hotels have a classes they offer in the pool or if it’s by the ocean they may have Paddle Board Yoga.

Have fun finding ways to MOVE YOUR BODY!!

REBOOT YOUR MIND: UNPLUG & RELAX

EVERYTHING works better when you unplug it for a bit... INCLUDING YOU!

As someone who loves to stay busy, plan ALL THE ACTIVITIES, and even on occasion sneak working on to my vacations, I know this better than most!

Give yourself time for NOTHING-NESS!! Just relaxing, quiet time. Book a massage, or just sleep in and veg out.

Sometimes I need a little help getting my mind to disconnect. Below are a few of my favorite ways to tame my monkey mind.

TRAVEL HEALTHY TIPS

CHECK OUT…

These meditation apps make it super simple to take 2-5 mins to just clear your mind and truly take a time out without thoughts and plans getting in the way.

Also journaling each day. The 5 min journal gives a great daily quote and then also provides a couple prompts so you can practice gratitude daily.

Vacations are a great time to pick up a book, or a new habit you’ve been “to busy to get to” when you’re in the hustle of everyday life.

I hope some of these tips help you have healthier travels & come back feeling refreshed!
