Immune Boosting Must Haves

This mama ain’t got time for cold & flu season!! And I know you feel the same!! So I wanted to share my Go-To ways we boost immunity as a family.

(The LIVE vid (below) was done when I was expecting our youngest baby Ky, so some of the supplements I share I had to avoid during pregnancy, HOWEVER when I’m not expecting these are our GO-Tos because our first & best defense is a good offense!! (I also included some of the additional things I do when I am PREGGO at the end of this blog for my expectant mamas to be ; ) )

The list below are my TOP recommendations for boosting immunity, but before we get to that I would be doing you a disservice if I didn’t first share the following….

WELLNESS MUSTS:

    • FUEL your mind with POSITIVITY!!  HOW & WHAT we habitually think has a HUGE impact on our health. Podcasts, Meditation, Audio Books, or Mindset Coaching from me or another coach of your choice can help!
    • WASH YOUR HANDS REGULARLY (not with hand sanitizer) BUT WITH SOAP AND WATER!!! Check out this Suds2Go Water Bottle that makes it easy to wash your hands on the go.
    • EAT CLEAN WHOLE FOODS, & avoid processed foods & sugar. SEE MY BLOGS: MY CLEAN FOODS GROCERY LIST & EATING CLEAN ON A BUDGET
    • Supplement using some or all of my recommendations from the list below.
    • OPT OUT of working out in gyms & studios, & instead if you are able GET OUTSIDE, get fresh air OR if the weather doesn’t permit outdoor activity JOIN ME & WORKOUT  from home!!  I’ve got over 1000 workouts to share with you in my Virtual Wellness Studio LEARN MORE HERE.

I review each of these items above in my video, but here are some other recommendations if like me  you ARE expecting and can’t use Oil of Oregano or the Wellness Formula Blend, and are looking to boost your immunity or fight of an infection during pregnancy. ALWAYS consult your doctor and seek treatment if you have a temperature and are pregnant!!

LIST OF OTHER FAVES TO USE TO BOOST IMMUNITY

(SAFE DURING PREGNANCY)

  • Apple Cider Vinegar – Preferably raw, like this brandACV alkalinizes the body, and most illnesses can’t thrive in alkaline environments.
    • Mix 1-2 tablespoons of ACV into water or tea and drink 3 times a day.
    • Gargle ACV to soothe a sore throat.
    • Used topically or in a bath, ACV can reduce fever.
  • Honey – Raw, local honey is antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antiseptic.
  • Onion – Raw onion has phytochemicals that help keep the respiratory tract open.
  • Lemon – Antibacterial. Also helps alkalinize the body. Rich in vitamin C.
  • Asian Mushrooms (maitake, shitake, reishi) – Antibacterial and antiviral.
  • Coconut oil – Antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal.
  • Blueberries – High in natural aspirin, can help lower fevers and relieve aches and pains.
  • Vitamins and minerals – Especially vitamin D, vitamin A from cod liver oil or liver only, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
  • Clear, unsweetened liquids – Dehydration is more of a concern in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women, so being diligent about staying hydrated is important. Coconut water is the perfect hydrator. SEE MY RECIPE FOR HOMEMADE ELECTROLYTE POPS BELOW!
  • Homemade chicken soup – Or simply bone broth from healthy chickens.
  • Warm salt water – Use as a gargle for a sore throat or with a neti pot for congestion.
  • Tea – Hot liquids help relieve sore throats and congestion and help prevent dehydration.
  • High quality probiotic – Supports general health. I get a hefty dose of pre and probiotics in my daily Superfood Shakeology Mix
  • The following herbs can be helpful for flu symptoms, but should not be used in therapeutic amounts during pregnancy. The amount normally found in food is safe and beneficial.
    • Cayenne powder – Antimicrobial, analgesic, and expectorant.
    • Garlic – Antiviral, antibiotic, and antiseptic.
    • Ginger – Antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Good for upset tummy.
    • Thyme – Antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant, and astringent. Great for respiratory infections, coughs, and upset tummy.
    • Cinnamon – Antiviral, and antibiotic.
Elderberry syrup – I personally take this well known natural cold and flu fighter. I know many pregnant mamas who have used with great success. However, it is a major immune booster, which means, if the newest information on pregnancy and influenza is correct (that pregnant women’s immune systems actually overreact to the flu), Elderberry might not be the best first choice, so consult your physician.

RECIPE FOR ELECTROLYTE ICE POPS

You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup Coconut Water (we use Zico and find it at Costco)
  • 1 cup Filtered water
  • 2 scoops of Ulitma (also found at whole foods) OR 1 scoop of Hydrate (both are electrolye mixes that use stevia as a mild sweetener. Ulitma comes in multiple flavors my preferred is Grape. Hydrate is from the Beachbody Performance Line and is a Citrus Flavor. Both are delicious)
  • Popsicle Molds

Directions:

  • Mix Coconut Water, Filtered water, and scoop/s of desired electrolye mix in a water bottle & shake vigorously.
  • Pour mixture into Popsicle Molds & Freeze for several hours or overnight
